I received this from Library Thing to read and review. This was an okay/mediocre book, but nothing spectacular. Luigi is the owner of a soon-to-fail Italian restaurant, previously owned and run by his father. I am not surprised the place is failing. He has not made any changes to keep up with the times. There is no Wi-Fi, no web site, now update to the décor, minimal slimming menu dishes to satisfy the weight conscious customer, and so forth. His wife, Maria, is obsessed with having a baby and is causing Luigi panic attacks. She convinces him to try a private clinic for help conceiving rather than use the national health system (They reside in England). The results of tests devastate Luigi, but he forges on with whatever Maria wants because he truly loves her, despite the fact that he is rapidly running out of money and the restaurant does not turn much of a profit if any. Suddenly, Luigi’s brother Tony, who has been living in the US and has had almost no contact with Luigi or his aged mother for years, arrives on the scene and Luigi hatches a scheme to solve the baby problem. Things start to look up, but, in the end, really don’t. The book is fairly well written. The plot is somewhat predictable, though there is a twist at the end that is surprising. I really cannot see how the author can stretch this into a series, though the author obviously intends to since the first chapter of the next book is included at the end of the one. Luigi’s wife Maria is rather self-centered and uncaring about her husband or any his problems. All she can focus on is the baby and her needs/desires. Luigi’s brother Tony is a cad, plain and simple. The author has made some attempt to humanize him more, but it just doesn’t happen. If you have the time and are interested in this sort of story, this book can be for you.

This book captured my full attention from the beginning. I very much enjoyed reading about this couple and their lives. Including their yearnings for a baby and the workings of the family restaurant. I couldn't put the book down there was so much going on. In fact when I was coming upon the end of the book I slowed down reading so I could enjoy it longer. However, the ending did disappoint me. I wont say why, don't want to give anything away, but I personally didn't like the way it ended. But, overall I would say a great read.
This is an all-around OK book; nothing stuck out to me as superb and nothing stuck out to me as awful.
In terms of the story itself, it is exactly what you expect from reading the synopsis. However, the first half of the book was quite slow for me, but around the 65% mark is when I finally got interested in the book. The plot was somewhat predictable, with only a couple surprises.

I didn't really connect with the characters. The story is told through Luigi's perspective and sometimes I felt like he was rambling on. While I tried to sympathize with Maria, I just couldn't rationalize all of her behavior. The secondary characters were good, I liked Jake and Tony was interesting.

There is a pretty big surprise at the end that shocked me. It didn't seem to jive with what I thought I knew about the characters. The ending provided a little closure, but also left me with several questions which are likely to be answered in the second book; sort of a cliff hanger, but not really.

It was an ok book and to be fair, maybe is just wasn't a good fit for me as a reader.
Based on the synopsis, I think I expected the “devastating news” to come sooner and for there to be more drama regarding the question “Will it be possible to keep his marriage and still have a baby?”.

I received a copy of this book for free from the author in exchange got an honest review.
